How We Created a Year-Round Living Space Without an Extension
29th April 2026
When Mr and Mrs Oliver started looking at ways to add space to their home, a traditional extension was quickly ruled out. Planning constraints made it unworkable, so their attention shifted to something separate from the house but still usable day to day.
“We decided to look at a standalone outbuilding,” they explained. “We wanted something we could use all year round, not just in the summer. A second living space, really, and somewhere that could double up as a studio.”
“It needed to be properly insulated, so a conservatory was out of the question. We didn’t want something that’s freezing in winter and too hot in summer.”
They also paid attention to maintenance. Composite cladding became a deciding factor fairly quickly.
“The fact it’s virtually maintenance-free made a big difference. And there were plenty of options with colours and flooring, so it didn’t feel limited.”
Finding a Supplier
They spent time comparing different options before settling on EYG. Initial impressions came from brochures and online material, but the decision was made after seeing the buildings in person at Langlands Garden Centre.
“We were impressed by the quality straight away. Seeing the show buildings confirmed what we’d hoped.”
The internal finish stood out in particular.
“The fully plastered internal walls made it feel more like a proper room, not a garden structure. That mattered to us.”
“We could actually design it around how we wanted to use the space, rather than picking something off the shelf.”
Support during the early stages helped keep things straightforward.
“Trevor at Langlands was extremely helpful and knew exactly what could be achieved. Jeremy made the design process easy to follow, and Ian was always available if we had questions during the build.”
Financing options were also a nice touch.
“The six months interest-free option helped spread the cost a bit, which was useful.”
Design and Installation
The process moved smoothly from design into construction.
“We found both the design and installation very good. The installation team were friendly, knew what they were doing, and just got on with it.”
There was one small issue during the process, but it was resolved without disruption.
“The radiator that was initially fitted wasn’t quite right for the size of the room. But it was picked up and replaced quickly with the correct one.”
From a build standpoint, that kind of adjustment is not unusual. Heating requirements in garden rooms depend heavily on glazing, insulation performance, and internal volume. In this case, the correction ensured the system matched the thermal load more appropriately.
Living With the Space
The garden room is now used almost every day, mainly as an additional lounge.
“We use it nearly daily. It heats up quickly and holds the warmth really well, so we don’t have to rely on the radiator as much as we expected.”
That performance comes down to the insulation levels and airtightness of the structure, which allow the space to retain heat once warmed.
What’s changed most is how they experience their garden.
“It’s given us a way to actually enjoy the garden properly. From the house, you don’t get that same feeling.”
Layout and Features
A defining feature of the build is the inclusion of two sets of bifold doors.
“We can open them fully and it feels like we’re sitting in the garden. That’s probably our favourite thing about it.”
This kind of opening changes how the space behaves across seasons. Closed, it functions as a well-insulated room. Open, it becomes more of a transitional space between indoors and outdoors.
“It really does feel like part of the home now, not something separate.”

Looking back, they’re clear about their decision. “We would recommend it, and we already have.” Feedback from visitors has reinforced that view. “Friends and family have been really impressed with how it turned out.”
For the Olivers, the project wasn't just about adding square footage. It was about shifting how and where they spend time at home, without needing to alter the main structure of the house.
