Home owner installs beautiful orangery for dining room

Mary Blair contacted EYG after moving into her newbuild home in Yorkshire and realising she did not have enough space to host dinners for family and friends.

Her home did not have a designated area big enough for a large table and chairs, and therefore she decided to extend with an orangery.

She asked for an orangery with a solid tiled roof, which would keep a nice pleasant temperature all year round.

Why did they choose an Orangery?

Mary said: “With the English weather being as it is, it’s great having this when friends are round, as we can come inside when it rains, and still feel as though we are outside.

“There isn’t space in the kitchen or sitting room to have a dinner party, so I wanted a room I can have dinner parties in. It is really lovely in there in the evening, you can see the stars and the moon through the sky light, and when I have dinner parties I light candles on the table and it’s lovely.

“I’m glad I had full-length windows as it really does feel like I’m in the garden when I am sat inside.”

Mary added: “It is wonderful in the winter because of the solid roof. I can use it all year.”

What did she think of the work?

Mary said: “The guys who constructed it were amazing. I was dreading it, thinking I’d have a big hole in the garden for months and there would be problems and delays. But it all worked like clockwork, I was amazed, it blew me away.

“I get a lot of comments about the orangery, everyone says how nice it looks,” she added.

Why did she choose a skylight?

Mary chose to have a sky light in the roof, to allow natural light to flood the space.

She also wanted full-length glass windows to maximise the views of her pretty south-facing garden, and opted for an orangery rather than a conservatory for that reason.
